Identifying Triggers And Mastering Emotional Intelligence

Leading with clarity, composure, and conviction is an asset not only in business, but in your professional life. But how does one pull that off? HINT: By knowing what trips your triggers.

Do you know your triggers?

Our resources and workshop series help participants learn, develop, demonstrate, and apply skill sets that enhance clarity, composure, and conviction. We recommend the following process to increase emotional intelligence (EI), identify triggers, and expand capacity for leading others. Here is a checklist that you may find beneficial:

Journal

  • Record emotionally intense moments daily and include:

    • Situation details (who, what, where)

    • Your emotional response (anger, anxiety, sadness, etc.)

    • Physical sensations (tight chest, racing heart, etc.)

    • Thoughts or beliefs (e.g., “I’m not respected”)

  • After 2–3 weeks, review for patterns.

Observe Physical Reactions

  • Your body often reacts before your mind catches up.

  • Common signs:

    • Muscle tension (neck, jaw, shoulders)

    • Rapid heartbeat or shallow breathing

    • Sweating, nausea, or fatigue

  • Practice body scans and mindful breathing to increase awareness.

Identify Thought Patterns

  • Listen to your inner dialogue during emotional moments and watch for:

    • Absolutes: “always,” “never,” “no one”

    • Cognitive distortions: catastrophizing everything, personalization.

  • Challenge these thoughts:

    • Ask: Is this thought true? What is the evidence?

    • Reframe with balanced alternatives.

Reflect on Past Experiences

  • Triggers often stem from unresolved childhood or past trauma. Use journaling or guided meditation to explore:

    • Family dynamics

    • Cultural influences

    • Significant emotional events

  • Create a timeline of impactful memories to connect dots.

Categorize Triggers

Use this table to organize your triggers:

Trigger Type Examples
People
Places
Times
Feelings
Thoughts
Physical Cues

Name the emotion during the trigger, pause, and breathe, then choose your ‘core value’ response. Applying your self-knowledge in triggers, you will notice you are triggered. Bring these tools with you to our next workshop! Our Interactive exercises, real-world case studies, and peer feedback help attendees refine communication, decision-making, and conflict-resolution skills.
